Reflections on New York

So our trip to New York was not so exciting as I had hoped. Besides taking what little bit of energy I had left over after midterms, I was stressed about my interviews and making our professor happy. Too many things to juggle, and I crumbled.
Here's where I went:

Sports Illustrated- Amazing people. They were so nice and their sports library was amazing. Being dumbfounded about sports, the SI office made even me want to jump for joy at March Madness.

Time magazine- Sat in their meetings for four hours without being able to say anything. Surreal because we were at Time magazine, but dreadful because they gave us the "New York" attitude when we would speak up. They are a great publication, and they should listen to us if they want to stay a great publication. I don't know what they are thinking by ignoring feedback from young writers.

Business Week- I did not go because I interviewed at a media planning agency.

Esquire- Very relaxing after Time magazine. We found quite a few UT alumni worked at Esquire. The magazine is genius because it targets guys in a "how-to" manner. I had to jet out for an internship interview, but left right before the editor walked in. I wished I had stayed.

CosmoGirl- Beautiful, fun and everything you thought that a teen fashion magazine should be! Walked out of the zebra printed elevators into a lobby covered in leopard and bubble-gum pink walls. To our right was an entire room full of shoes and clothing. I want to live in their office!! The meeting was really exciting, and probably my favorite meeting overall because we were so warmly received.

Entertainment Weekly- The editors were so chill and laid back, they even had goodie bags for each one of us!! The EW speakers made journalism sound like you should not go into it unless you want to live on the street as a hobo for four years until someone gives you a big break. They kinda scared us away from the whole magazine journalism experience. I appreciate their honesty because it is so true... do I really want to work in magazines?
