I would like to dedicate one of my posts to one of two men (after my father) who I can honestly say has loved me unconditionally throughout my entire life: my grandpa Newton. He passed away on Monday, August 28 in the early hours of the morning after suffering major brain damage due to falling down. He was 98 years old.
I am very proud to have witnessed the last few years of his existence. He was born in 1907 on a farm in North Texas. He was eager to learn and graduated as the valedictorian of his class. He met my grandma while cruising aroung Tarleton College (where he attended) in his Model T Ford. They were married in May 1929, and began their marriage at the beginning of the depression.
He was a pioneer of radio in Texas and helped establish several stations. He also educated the military on Morse code during WWII.
It is amazing that I got to know and love such a man. I was the very last granchild of his to be born from his only son. Since he had three girls and one boy, it was up to my father to carry out the Newton name. I was expected to be a boy and to be the reflection of my grandfather Newton. My name was even picked out: Matthew Allen Newton, or "little MAN" to reflect my grandfather's nickname during his childhood as "big man."
Although I was the last hope and I turned out to be a female, my grandfather still loved me unconditionally and taught me to value all that you have, educate yourself on as much as possible and explore.
I am sad that he is gone, but I will always hold onto the memories that we had (and that Oscar the Grouch book that he bought for me).
I love you grandpa!!
R.I.P. Robert Milton Newton.
